Sweet Home Review: Human desires make monsters.

by man-k 2022. 12. 2.

Human desires make monsters.

"Sweet Home" is a horror-creature genre Korean drama released on Netflix in 2020. Prior to "Squid Game," it was successful to hit by entering No. 3 on Netflix among Korea dramas for the first time.

Beginning Story

Hyun-soo, a high school student who lives alone in a collapsing old apartment. He locked himself in the room and even thought of suicide, but he tries to survive somehow in a rapidly changing world.

Human turns into a monster, and those monsters become trapped surrounding the old apartment, but...he tries to fight with his neighbors together!

Review

With the setting that humans turn into monsters because of human desires, it is impressive to express monsters in a various and a unique way according to each desire. Human characters also created solid stories for each, increasing the density of the story.

Although there are some parts like the long histrionics code and the unfriendly explanation, that much is enough to pass, and it can be watched while being quite immersed.

It doubled the fun of genre dramas by putting in a large number of characters that were not in the original webtoon and expanding the scale. However, there is an evaluation that the original is better for psychological description and fear and thrill in a confined space.

Personally, the actor Go Min-si, who plays the role of "Lee Eun-yu," a high school girl majoring in dance, drew my attention. She is a rookie-class actor, but she filled the screen with charisma.

Extra Story

It is said that the original author asked for the ending of the drama to be different from the original. The drama will be released while the webtoon is still on, so she didn't want the ending of the webtoon to be released in advance. (But in reality, the drama was released after the webtoon ended.)

The original author later serialized "Shotgun Boy" as a Sweet Home's prequel cartoon.

The drama "Sweet Home" is scheduled to be produced by season 3, and season 2 will be released on Netflix in 2023.
