Dramatic True Story, dramatically completed.
Narco-Saints is a Korean drama released on Netflix in September 2022. Adding the complete production and acting to this movie based on the true story creates a high level of immersion.
Beginning story, Setting
Kang In-gu, staring business in the South American Country of Suriname. However, due to the drug lord who has taken over Suriname and a same Korean, he is falsely accused and imprisoned.
The Korean government tries to arrest the drug lord with all means and Kang In-gu joins the government secret mission after much consideration and approaches the drug lord.
Review
The story itself is ordinary, however, the setting based on the true story and the locations in resemblance of real Suriname increased the sense of realism and immersion. The heavy production added the weight to the drama and breathtaking lines were effectively used in it. Most of the performance of actors were also excellent and there were no areas of deficiency as a genre drama.
Despite Yoon Jong-bin being in his early 40s, he is a film director with solid filmography of Korea. Narco-Saints is his first drama production, and his features and strengths were well portrayed as in the movie. He depicted the glim side of the society with details and appropriately utilized the side humors in it. Personally, I recommend this as the most immersed Korean Drama since ‘Squid Game’.
Extra Story
Representative film of Director Yoon Jong-bin includes ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time’, ‘Kundo: Age of the Rampant’, and ‘The Spy Gone North’.
Ha Jungwoo, the main character of Narcos-Saints, is one of the representative actors in Korea and has appeared in three of the above four films. Another main character named Hwang Jung-min is also a representative actor in Korea and appeared in ‘The Spy Gone North’ among the above films.
Regarding the negative impression of Suriname in the drama, actual Suriname government protested and expressed regret. (Conversely, some say that local people didn’t take dramas seriously and laughed over it.)
In the drama, the signature ball of the former baseball player Park Chan-ho appears as an important prop. Park Chan-ho was mesmerized on how his real sign ball was utilized as a prop through Instagram. On the side note, Park Chan-ho is the first Korean Major League Base ball Player (Pitcher) and has the record of the most wins in Asia (124 wins) in the Major League.
