Compressed the original work in half, Increasing the density of the movie

Money Heist: JEA is a Korean drama released on Netflix in June 2022, which is a remake of the French drama <Money Heist>. Despite receiving disappointing evaluation compared to the original work, it increased the density of the movie by compressing the original 13 episodes (season 1) into 6 episodes.

Beginning story, Setting

The year of 2026, the Korean Peninsula looking forward to reunification.
South and North Korea sets up a joint mint to create a common currency, and a mysterious man called “Professor” plans a meticulous hostage play in this facility. They are planning to recklessly stamp bills from the mint by gathering experienced thieves and holding hostage.

Review

The setting of Korean Peninsula looking to reunify was somewhat grand and inconsistent with the timeline. At the time of release on Netflix, the president of South Korea was switched to the conservative party, and the tensions with North Korea was formulated to some extent.

However, other than the background setting of unified Korea, the development and reversal of major events are in tandem to the original work and thus it is hard to see newness in the story itself.

That’s why the movie was ranked number 1 in viewing time directly after its release on Netflix, but soon fell off the ranks and moved away from the top 10 list after the fourth week.

Nevertheless, I would like to recommend this as an interesting drama. If you can endure the first episode with unfamiliar setting, you can be fully immersed in the drama from the second episode with the speedy development of the plot.

The original film is consisted of 13 episodes of Season 1 that breaks the tensity, however, this film, Money Heist: JEA, was compressed into six episodes that leave no space for boredom. On the contrary, it did not express the emotional lines of characters thoroughly, and so there are parts that somewhat lacks probability.

Extra Story

Park Hae-soo, playing the role of ‘Berlin’, whom the significant part of his works was released from Netflix, and so nicknamed ‘Netflix’s exclusive actor’. Many of his works have recorded the top spot of Netflix viewing time and hence the nickname fits its pertinence. His representative work includes the drama ‘Squid Game’, ‘Money Heist: JEA’, ‘Narco-Saints’, and movies like ‘Time to Hunt’ and ‘Yaksha: Ruthless Operations’.
